Dachshund Adoption Rescue and Education, Inc. (DARE) views its mission as increasing public awareness through education against animal cruelty, related issues and overpopulation while rescuing and re-homing displaced and unwanted dachshunds and dachshund mix dogs in the state of Florida.
We do this by:
1. Rescuing and socializing abandoned, neglected, abused, orphaned and/or surrendered dachshunds and dachshund mixes by providing temporary safe shelter and medical/dental treatments as needed.
2. Procuring temporary foster homes and permanent new homes for rescued dachshunds that will provide a safe and nurturing home environment.
3. Ensuring no dachshund shall be adopted for the purposes of breeding or scientific/medical experimentation.
4. Providing education to the public on the dachshund breed, puppy mills, and responsible pet guardianship including, but not limited to, humane animal care and spay/neuter practices.
5. Displaying courtesy, respect and fellowship toward all volunteers in appreciation of services and support rendered to dachshund rescue and to promoting enhanced teamwork among all rescuers.

Meet DARE’s 2016 Board of Directors
Alicia Duval – President
Alicia Duval is a Tampa native who has been involved with DARE since 2007 when she found DARE through mutual friends after the passing of her beloved doxie of almost 15 years,”Gator”. She first started out as a volunteer for transports and fundraising. She decided to become a member and made the leap to a DARE foster home where she quickly became a “foster failure” (several times over). Alicia then went on to become the Fundraising and Volunteer Coordinator where she took on the coordinator role of our annual fundraiser, Dox-a-Palooza (Doxapalooza.com), which is always the first Saturday in November, then Vice President, and currently President.
Alicia has a full time career in TV Production, takes care of her Alzheimer stricken Grandmother full time in addition to leading DARE. I guess you could say taking care of those who need it comes naturally to her.
Alicia’s passion for DARE and the success of the rescue as an organization is matched only by her love of the dogs. She currently lives in Tampa with her partner Lena and their 6 fur-children; Mackey, Freckles, Peanut, Forrest Gump, Morgan, and Chloe.
As you can see from her picture Alicia is the proud mom of Forrest Gump-Duval, who has his own Facebook page & is a DARE ambassador. Facebook.com/ForrestGumpDuval and even promotes himself as a “Celebrity-Entertainer”. His antics have gardened him worldwide attention, loyal fans, and even his own personal legal council. He is a legend, even if only in his own mind.
Thanks to Alicia DARE has jumped feet first into the digital & social era where social media has proven to help more dogs get rescued, more dogs find forever homes, and more funds get raised than ever before. Alicia believes that DARE has an obligation to continue to evolve with the times and keep the rescue relevant and current to the times in which we live. Her goal as President is to focus on building a network of quality foster homes in all parts of Florida, maintaining healthy and happy fosters, educating the public about rescue & the dachshund breed, as well as fundraising to make the public aware of DARE and its mission, which is to save Dachshund and Dachshund mixes in need.
If there is any part of you that wants to help DARE you are encouraged to reach out to us. It all starts with one small step, one small offer to help, and one big heart.
Pat Duval – Treasurer
Pat’s involvement with DARE began in 2007, when she went to a DARE adoption event to help her mother-in-law pick out her first dachshund. Her mother-in-law was so worried about how she would know the “right” one for her. When she sat down, one particular doxie came up to her and jumped up in her lap. She would place him down on the ground but he kept coming back; so she said, “Well I guess he picked me.” At that same event, Pat had the chance to meet others who were with the DARE rescue group and hear their stories. It sounded easy enough to help so Pat and her family got involved. Initially, she and her family volunteered with transporting, fundraising, and working events. Then in later dates, Pat went on to foster rescued Dachshunds, and ultimately joined DARE’s Board of Directors.
Professionally, Pat has been a banker for over 35 years, with her current position being an SVP at a local community bank.
Pat is married to her childhood sweetheart Michael also known as Grandpa Gump. He is a retired USAF and Hillsborough County Schools Resource Officer. Their household consists of three daughters, an 86-year old mother-in-law, and 7 dachshunds, 6 of which have been adopted through DARE.
Pat says, “I love being able to help with the rescue and adoption of the dogs. I also enjoy shopping for doxie items that I can donate for the e-bay site. I have become a doxie shopping fanatic.” So when you need a doxie item, take a look at our ebay store. We have so many people that donate really great items, and finding those great deals to donate can become an obsession. (Just ask her husband.)
In Pat’s “spare” time, she enjoys reading, crafting, and Florida beaches! She believes DARE is a great organization and does great work. She has volunteered for other groups, but they were nothing like DARE. Pat says, “Each dachshund has a story and being a part of that is rewarding. I believe everyone can help DARE continue its mission; it’s just a matter of finding out which niche is for you and letting that passion take off.”
